McDonald played U.S. prosecutor Liz Lawrence in the first episode of her role was seen on CBS's The Good Wife legal drama in the year 2009. She reprised this role in 2018as the season main character Liz Reddick in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. As a result of the role she played, McDonald received three Critics Choice Award nominations. She appears as a special guest for the HBO series The Gilded Age by Julian Fellowes.
